In Belgium
What does ETM do in Belgium?
For ETM, it is a process that:
-
Examines the links between people in the countries of the North and those in the “developing” countries of the South (= the Third World).
-
Enables children and adults to see more clearly the similarities between their own lives and those of other people around the world.
-
Broadens awareness of the economic, social, political and environmental forces that govern our lives.
-
Develops skills, attitudes and values so that children and young people discover opportunities for solidarity action, enabling them to take on real responsibility in their future lives and to help build a more sustainable and fairer world, in which power and resources are shared equitably.
Development education is a component of global education that puts the spotlight on the gap between the rich countries of the North and the poor countries of the South.
Why raise young people’s awareness and get them involved?
The gap between rich and poor keeps on widening…
Year after year, the people who produce our coffee find it increasingly difficult to survive… The world must become fairer and the South must be given opportunities for sustainable development.
The North, with its heavy ecological and economic footprint, bears a great responsibility in this area.
Anyone who strives to bring about improvement in the countries of the South must also work towards a change of mentality in the countries of the North and build a broad base of support there for international cooperation rooted in solidarity, by raising public awareness and mobilising public opinion.
Young people and children are the ones who, in the next generation, will shape the society of tomorrow and are currently the most receptive and the most likely to change their attitudes. In other words, behaviour is shaped from a very early age.
ETM’s mission
Through education and youth movements, ETM aims to give children and young people the knowledge, concepts, ability to understand others and skills that will enable them to become caring and engaged young global citizens.
Education activities
-

-

-
the organisation and supervision of immersion trips, combined with the practical implementation of a micro-project by the group of participants;
-
sending young adults to do volunteer work with partner organisations in the Philippines and other countries…
