North-Kivu, Democratic Republic of the Congo

To significantly and sustainably improve the living conditions of young domestic workers, mainly girls, in Goma, Bukavu and Uvira.

The project aims to strengthen their protection and their rights, to help them acquire vocational skills and to promote their access to decent work and greater autonomy.

Objectives

The project supports young domestic workers at different stages of their journey:

  • support for Vocational Training Centres (CFP), organisation of apprenticeships and practical work placements, and equipment for training courses;

  • vocational training, in particular in culinary arts, early childhood care, hospitality and catering;

  • basic literacy and numeracy skills, as well as an introduction to entrepreneurship;

  • raising awareness among communities and employers of the rights of young workers and promoting decent work;

  • strengthening the legal framework surrounding domestic workers, particularly with regard to official recognition, contracts and representation;

  • supporting young people during their training and on their path to employment;

  • capacity-building for local partners, particularly on human rights, gender-based violence, child protection and monitoring and evaluation.

The programme also works in synergy with ENABEL on in-service training for vocational teachers. This collaboration is explicitly mentioned in the 2025 annual report.

Activities

The project enables young domestic workers in Goma, Bukavu and Uvira to access vocational training and employment support, while also working to improve their working environment.

The intervention thus combines vocational training, employment support, awareness-raising among employers and communities, and strengthening the protection of domestic workers.
